The grand campaign from 1918-1989 (or something) just makes it a HOI grand strategy game instead of a conflict simulator in a way no other one does. It feels like an alive game, I played it for hoi4, too, and it's fun but not the same. I'd actually say that's why it's my favorite HOI game. It's just very well made in my experience, it's less flashy than the games they make now (i thought imperator was beautiful and enjoyed one play through, but then I realized there's no soul, DH has little flash but big soul).ĪND THEN there are the mods, which just take it to another level. The tech system is fun and I enjoy all the events (not sure on vanilla but definitely in mods).

That might be the biggest advantage over later games in the series TBH. At first I didn't like how big the provinces are compared to hoi 3, but it actually does a good job of making the AI better because there's less opportunity for it to hugely fuck up (on hoi 3 or 4 it will just leave entire fronts open it big gaps in fronts for no reason, that's harder when the front is smaller). I know that sounds vague, but the game mechanics are a good blend of strategy without micromanagent. It's hard to say, at its core I like it the most because it's just the most fun to play.
